PRESENTATION: Inspection Applications of Acoustic Pulse Reflectometry (APR)
Acoustic Pulse Reflectometry (APR) has recently been gaining acceptance for a variety of tube inspection applications, as a viable alternative to more entrenched technologies. It is based on sending acoustic pulses down a tube to be inspected, and measuring the reflections caused by faults. Though it can be used to detect various faults, such as pitting, general wall loss, and fouling, it is also very useful in detecting leaks. Through wall holes can present a serious challenge to other methods, as they often involve very little loss of wall material. However, from the point of view of an acoustic wave, a through hole presents an acoustic short circuit to the external atmosphere, therefore even small holes (1mm in diameter or less) cause sizable reflections which can be detected easily. We present an introduction to this technology, in addition to several case studies demonstrating the high sensitivity of this technique.
