PRESENTATION: Can Smart Automated Weld Inspection Turn A Cost Into A Profit?
Weld inspection is traditionally thought of as a “necessary evil” done to satisfy required customer demands and/or applicable industry welding standards. Unfortunately this is a reactive approach to assuring acceptable weld quality is achieved. The more proactive approach is to look at this from a Total Quality Control (TQC) perspective, which by doing so can positively affect not only quality but also productivity.
The “state of the art” of manual visual weld inspection can be summarized as follows: 1) very subjective, 2) redundant in that multiple people sometimes need to do the inspection in case one person misses something, 3) slow & costly, 4) mistake prone – mistakes in reading of measurements as well as recording results, 5) produces very little usable data that can drive Continuous Improvement and 6) not part of Total Quality Plan from the standpoint of trying to prevent defects from occurring.
This presentation will describe a much better approach and explain its role in helping companies move towards more productive automated welding.
