PRESENTATION: Computed Tomography for Metrology Applications
X-ray computed tomography is a technology for complete acquisition of components. In this process, the workpiece is positioned on a rotary table between the X-ray source and detector. The detector works analogously to a CCD camera. A series of x-ray images of the object are taken at various rotary table positions. A mathematical process reconstructs the spatial contour of the component from the x-ray images. The 3D image resulting from the reconstruction consists of volume elements (voxels). Each voxel has a density value indicating the radiation absorbed by the component within the volume element. The reconstructed volume model describes the complete geometry of the workpiece, including interior geometry and undercuts.
The precision obtainable in computer tomography is influenced by many number factors including, radiation wavelength, geometry, and workpiece material. They are difficult to correct. The precision obtained up to now using computer tomography was not sufficient for dimensional inspection.
Computer tomography, combined with precision sensors, makes rapid, complete workpiece acquisition possible using tomography and exact measurement of tight tolerances with correction files obtained with classical sensors. This is implemented in the Werth
